While today’s roadways are filled with crossovers and SUVs, some buyers prefer the handling and styling of a sedan. One stand-out option alongside the other models in the Genesis showroom is the 2023 G80. This mid-sized Genesis holds a unique presence among luxury sedans with its unique five-sided grille and dual-row headlights. It's a singular look, reinforced by the sweeping body lines dreamed up by Luc Donckerwolke, the brand's chief creative officer who gained recognition for his previous work with Lamborghini, Bentley, and Audi.
Beyond its distinctive looks, the G80 is decked with the latest technology, such as a standard 14.5-inch touchscreen and optional Remote Smart Parking Assist (self-parking feature). Among the engine choices is a potent twin-turbo V6 pushing out 375 horsepower. All-wheel drive is available, too. Genesis also provides five years or 60,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper protection, while the powertrain coverage lasts for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Genesis ownership is even easier with complimentary maintenance for three years of 36,000 miles and Genesis Service Valet (a loaner car with pickup and drop-off service).
This overview looks at the gasoline-powered 2023 Genesis G80; the Electrified G80 is covered separately.
Trims and Powertrains
Buyers of the Genesis G80 can select from three trims – 2.5T RWD, 2.5T AWD, or 3.5T Sport AWD – and those names lend strong hints as to the engine and drivetrain. G80s with the 2.5T name get a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 300 horsepower and 311 lb.-ft. of torque. In 3.5T form, the G80 comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 powerplant, producing 375 horsepower and 391 lb.-ft. of torque. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is standard with the base G80, while all-wheel drive (AWD) comes on the mid-tier and top trims. All G80s rely on an eight-speed automatic transmission for gear changes. The 2.5T RWD is EPA-estimated to achieve 22 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway (or 22 city/30 highway for the 2.5T AWD). With the larger engine, the G80 gets 17 mpg around town and 26 mpg on the open road.
Standard Features and Option Packages
The included equipment for the 2.5T (with either drivetrain) is led by LED exterior lighting, dual-zone climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, a hands-free trunk opener, a driver's position memory system, leatherette upholstery, and heated 12-way power front seats. This version also gets power-folding heated side mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with power tilt and telescopic controls, 18-inch alloy wheels, an 8-inch driver information display with analog gauges, automatic high beams, and adjustable ambient cabin lighting. A heated steering wheel and heated rear seats come standard on AWD-equipped G80s.
The Advanced package adds a panoramic sunroof, tri-zone climate control, ventilated front seats, matte-finished interior wood accents, power rear and manual side rear-window shades, 19-inch wheels, and a power trunk. Building off the Advanced package is the Sport Prestige option yielding leather-trimmed seats, an ergo-motion driver's seat, sport exterior accents, bolsters and a cushion extender for the driver's seat, power-closing doors, a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument cluster, wireless device charging, and Genesis Digital Key (a smartphone app for keyless vehicle use).
Moving up to the 3.5T AWD will get you the equipment of the lower trims with the Advanced package. Genesis adds leather upholstery, power-closing doors, sport exterior accents, an upgraded driver's seat (with bolsters, extended cushion, and ergo-motion feature), wireless device charging, and Genesis Digital Key. For the ultimate G80 3.5T, those who place an order can add the Sport Prestige package (with either all-season or summer tires). This very special equipment grouping includes Nappa leather upholstery, a 12.3-inch 3D digital instrument cluster, rear-wheel steering (for quicker lane changes and optimal low-speed maneuvering), a head-up display, a microfiber suede headliner, carbon fiber trim, and 20-inch alloy wheels.
